Director of Manufacturing Engineering

SUMMARY OF POSITION:   

Reporting to the VP of Engineering this position is responsible for leading an organization responsible for manufacturing, test and sustaining engineering.  This position will oversee manufacturing engineering department which has a primary responsibility of maximizing manufacturing efficiency by focusing both on the smooth transfer from new engineering design to predictable repetitive production and on ongoing improvement of production process and supplier quality. Position will collaborate with product development, manufacturing, supply chain, reliability engineering and quality to:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop manufacturing tools and processes

  • Reduce product cost and manufacturing cycle time

  • Develop effective product testing

  • Coordinate with manufacturing, quality and reliability to develop and monitor metrics for cost, yield and quality

  • Champion DFx to reduce product  cost and improve product quality

  • Develop robust manufacturing processes.

  • Create and monitor manufacturing metrics for cost, yield , throughput and quality

  • Lead continuous improvement efforts to refine our manufacturing methods, processes and product design to achieve lowest product cost.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:  

  • Masters Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent

  • 15 years experience in manufacturing for moderate to high volume product requiring complex mechanical assembly.

  • 5 years management experience leading a manufacturing engineering team

  • Proven track record of developing lean manufacturing processes and tooling and leading DFx development.

  • Demonstrated success in manufacturing and test process/quality improvement, and analysis/recommendation of design changes to support quality/process improvement;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead cross functional teams

  • Lean/Six Sigma certification strongly desired.   

  • Demonstrated success in the skill and art of managing a team and keep the team motivated;

  • In-depth, hands-on experience in developing improved test and assembly processes/methods/fixtures/tools.

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 required

Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Description of Role:

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this position is responsible for delivering production ready designs on time and on budget, meeting aggressive cost targets. This position will apply superior mechanical design management expertise to deliver innovative cost reductions and reliability improvements on a utility scale solar generator product line.  In addition, the Sr. Mechanical Engineer will plan and execute thorough and efficient product development initiatives from concept through production, following the company’s Integrated Product Development Process and in collaboration with manufacturing, supply chain, reliability engineering and quality to:

  • Develop a low cost product from concept through mass production.

    • Develop detailed design requirements balancing performance, cost and schedule

    • Lead the development of analytical and drawing products to support the design

    • Champion design for manufacturability, assembly, reliability  and test (DFx)

    • Validate designs through appropriate analysis and engineering tests

  • Support customer interactions and presentations

  • Support supplier interfaces including selection, qualification and problem resolution

  • Provide leadership for next generation architectures and solutions

Requirements:

  • 3D Solid Modeling CAD background

  • Understanding of Design of Experiments

  • Moderate volume product design with emphasis on low production cost

  • Development of products intended for long term outdoor exposure

  • Motion systems

  • Large systems involving hydraulics or large electric motors

  • Precision moving mechanisms

  • Sheet metal (cabinets, ducts, enclosures, etc.)

  • Design of sealing systems (Adhesives, Gaskets, Windshields, Tanks, Etc.)

  • Structural design (ASCE code, steel and weld specifications)

Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering and ABET accredited University or equivalent, (MS preferred),

  • 5-10 years’ experience as a mechanical engineer responsible for designing low cost product for mass production.  

  • Proven track record of developing lean manufacturing processes and tooling and leading DFx development.

  • 3+ years experience in project planning and coordination; proactively identify tasks, resources, equipment, etc.

  • Understanding of revision control best practices using PDM

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to develop & deliver clear and concise reports & presentations using Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint

  • Must be able to manage an array of design subcontractors

Supplier Quality Engineer

Description of Role:  

Amonix seeks an experienced Supplier Quality Engineer with expert knowledge of materials, components and manufacturing processes used in the solar PV and electrical power industries. Demonstrated success optimizing supply chain quality in high-volume electronics assembly or complex capital equipment manufacturing environments is required to develop and execute Quality Assurance and Supplier Quality Management procedures for the company's global supply base. This position reports to Vice President of Quality Assurance and is located at Amonix’ Southern California headquarters. This is an opportunity to cultivate the most capable supply chain in the CPV industry and demands a candidate with outstanding technical skills and exceptional project management abilities.

Primary functions and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Implementing and executing Amonix Supplier Quality Management procedures in support of product development and manufacturing expansion objectives, including component and vendor qualification, quality inspections and process control validation, and quality systems auditing;

  • Optimizing product performance and ensuring adherence to Amonix requirements by monitoring and managing supplier quality metrics, providing direct engineering focus on material and component quality improvements, and performing regular product quality reviews with key supplier management and technical representatives;

  • Ensuring suppliers’ quality management systems and process governance are transparent by performing occasional process and system audits to verify Amonix suppliers have relevant and robust process controls and quality assurance procedures able to meet Amonix standards;

  • Verifying and validating that Amonix suppliers are performing routine and rigorous supplier quality audits, maintaining performance metrics, and employing formal procedures like APQP and PPAP to qualify their suppliers’ materials and components to Amonix requirements and standards;

  • Active participation in reliability engineering, failure analysis and defect reduction efforts, driving corrective and preventative actions for material and functional exceptions, and supporting design qualification and change management to increase product performance and process capability;

  • Developing and maintaining technology and process road maps of supplier's processes, identifying risk areas and actions to improve performance and reduce costs.

Required Skills and Experience:  

  • Demonstrated expertise and direct experience with quality management systems and related control procedures, including but not limited to:

  • APQP, including FMEA, SPC and Process Control Plans; Process and product change management and qualification procedures;

  • Metrology and Test systems, MSA/GR&R Capability and Calibration methodologies and applications in designing and producing complex electromechanical systems;

  • Final product test and outgoing quality audits; sampling methodology and defect management; continuous process capability and yield improvement;

  • Failure analysis and root cause investigation, closed-loop corrective and preventative action definition and execution.

  • Excellent computer and analytical skills, proficient with all standard MS Office products, able to process, analyze, and interpret a variety of engineering, commercial, and financial data.

  • Experience with Product Life Cycle Management systems and procedures and expert ability to perform all quality assurance duties involved in executing design and process change management functions.

  • Broad knowledge of materials engineering and manufacturing methods and experience implementing production quality control systems.

  • Verifiable skill evaluating and analyzing design and process documents and practical knowledge of AMSE Y14.5 and IPC 610 requirements and related standards, with fundamental understanding of underlying measurement and control principles.

  • Experience developing and maintaining Quality Management Systems with a strong background in ISO 9000-2008 certification and system maintenance preferred.

  • Experience with IEC, UL, and/or CSA standards and related certifying organizations and product certification procedures applicable to the photovoltaic generally, with preference for direct CPV familiarity.

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum BS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering or Physics from accredited university, MS preferred.

  • At least 7 years’ of product engineering or quality assurance experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment producing integrated electromechanical systems.

  • Six-sigma Black belt certification and DMAIC and/or DFSS/DFR project experience required, and CQA and CQE certification or equivalent training and experience is preferred;

  • Outstanding teamwork ethic and collaboration skills, able to lead and contribute to diverse teams and coordinate actions across organizations to provide continuous improvement.

Optics Engineer

Description of Role:

The engineering would work in Amonix’s Advanced Technology Group and would be responsible for research and development of new ideas, design and innovations surrounding the optical components of Amonix’s CPV technology.  This includes software modeling of the optical system to be generated and verified  using laboratory test procedures; propose and demonstrate both near and long term improvements to the existing Fresnel lens system; model, design and optimize concentrating optics and III-V multi-junction solar cells; establish the characterization group for indoor and outdoor characterization of concentrating photovoltaic cells, optics, and modules; develop metrology tools and manufacture protocols for evaluating various optical architectures; design, fabricate and verify optical elements for concentrating photovoltaic systems; conceptualize, design, and prototype advanced optics for next-generation photovoltaic products.  Interface with key production and technology suppliers, modeling and testing performance of productions, approaches, designs and ideas.

Requirements:

  • Experience with Zemax and Matlab is a must
  • Experience with Design and execution of experiments
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and programming, analysis of experimental data
  • Experience with generating, capturing and filing intellectual property is a plus
  • Experience with solar in a university or company setting is a plus

Preferences:

  • Supplier interface experience is a plus

Qualifications:

    Master’s Degree in Engineering / Optical Science

  • 3-5 yrs professional experience
