Position Summary
The successful applicant will have knowledge and experience in control system design and implementation, including algorithms, sensor integration, and modeling, and will be able to apply practical systems engineering expertise to deliver thorough requirements and specifications for a large scale 2-axis solar tracking motion system including electrical and hydraulic equipment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct the testing necessary to validate that system design criteria are met, and have demonstrated the related systems level data analysis and problem solving skills.
Candidate Profile
BS required, MS preferred in EE, ME, Systems, Mechatronics, or SW from a premier ABET accredited American University.
- 2 years experience in systems engineering, either in relevant graduate research or product development
- ]Outstanding English oral and written communication skills
Required DEMONSTRATED Application of Expertise
- Ability to quickly develop system architecture for multi axis motion systems
- Ability to conceive of and quickly assess robust algorithms utilizing a variety of potentially noisy sensor data, including self-calibrating and self optimizing functionality
- Ability to develop system level technical specifications, and to decompose to subsystem level specifications
- Ability to analyze document, and summarize design trade-offs
- Computer savvy, Word, PowerPoint, Visio
- Ability to rapidly develop mathematical models in MathCad, Mathematica, Matlab, or other software modeling tools
- Understanding of subsystem specifications including relevant electrical, electronic, embedded processing, mechanical, and hydraulic motion equipment
- Ability to develop and execute design validation test plans, analyze data, troubleshoot problems, arrive at solid technical conclusions, summarize and present results.
Preferred Experience & Expertise (not required to have , more is better)
- Expertise in Kinematic analysis
- Expertise in statistical methods for characterizing noise, bias, and variance in system inputs and outputs
- Development of specifications for 2-axis tracker control systems
- Knowledge of embedded processor based control systems from both a hardware and software perspective, including ability to establish data throughput requirements for proper system performance.
- Expertise in modern control theory, state variable methods, statistically weighted parameters, robust control systems, etc.
- Expertise in Kalman Filters and other methods of integrating disparate sensor feedback into a control algorithm
- Experience with CPV (including 1- or 2-axis tracking systems)
- Ability to write procedures for field installation, calibration and trouble shooting of 2 axis solar tracking systems
- Ability to debug prototype equipment, wiring , sensors, control systems
- Experience with data acquisition and noise immunity
- Ability to design and troubleshoot basic digital and analog circuitry
- Ability to breadboard sensor bench tests
