    JUNO BEACH, Fla., Oct. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, the competitive energy subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. /quotes/zigman/599131/quotes/nls/nee NEE -0.06% and North America's leading generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun, announces the commissioning of the Hatch Solar Center, located in Hatch, N.M.

    The 5-megawatt Hatch facility is comprised of 84 Amonix 60-kilowatt units, and began operation in June 2011. The plant is the largest operating concentrated photovoltaic solar power plant in North America. NextEra Energy Resources owns and operates the plant and sells the power to El Paso Electric under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

    Concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar technology is a cost effective way to generate clean, renewable commercial solar power on a scale large enough to be used by electric utilities. CPV is a “disruptive innovation” in the solar industry with the potential to displace traditional thin-film and silicon-based PV and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies in utility-scale projects in sunny and dry climates. Because CPV does not require water in operation, uses land better, and produces more energy per acre than any other solar technology, CPV is the best choice in areas where there is an abundance of sunshine, water is a concern and land use is an issue.

    Presentations on advances in photovoltaics technologies, grid integration systems, market prospects, and other solar energy topics reported at SPIE Optics + Photonics 2011 recently are now available via open access on the SPIE website.

    Eight plenary talks and more than 120 conference presentations have been posted in slide-plus-audio format. Presenters represent industry, academia, and government labs, and include researchers and developers such as Howard Branz (NREL), Sean Shaheen (Univ. of Denver), Vahan Garboushian (Amonix), I. E. W. Samuel (Univ. of St Andrews), and Dick de Boer (Philips).

    Tucson continues to expand its reputation as the Southwest's most active "Solar Center" with a long string of solar announcements in recent months. The area's combination of R & D, manufacturing, business community support, and solar incentives helps this industry thrive in this region.

    A number of collaborations between public and private sector entities have resulted in the use of 317 acres of land to construct photovoltaic arrays. Amonix, a leader in CPV (concentrated photovoltaic) solar power systems, established a utility scale solar energy 2-megawatt AC Nameplate power plant within 12 acres of the designated "Solar Zone" of the UA TechPark. The "Solar Zone" is a 222-acre cutting edge environment that encourages development, testing, and demonstration of the next generation of renewable energy products and technologies. Other solar companies establishing a presence at the "Solar Zone" include Bell Independent Power Company, SOLON, CTC Electric, Emcore Corp, and Foresight/Solar Point.
