The Seal Beach-based firm was recognized at the 2011 CleanTechOC Conference and Expo.
Seal Beach-based Amonix, a rapidly growing manufacturer of solar energy systems, was named “Company of the Year” by CleanTech OC on Monday at its 2011 Conference and Expo in Irvine.
Amonix was launched in 1989 by Founder and Chief Technology Officer Vahan Garboushian, who has been at the helm of the firm’s explosive growth the past two years. Garboushian and his executive team raised more than $130 in venture capital to allow the company to expand from less than 40 employees to more than 600 and move into multiple foreign markets.
In accepting the prestigious Company of the Year award, Garboushian said, “the company’s vision is to make solar electricity for the masses…we are on our way and we are excited and humbled by the opportunity.”

Colorado installation featuring Amonix CPV systems will become the largest in the world when completed.
The US Department of Energy has finalized a $90.6 million loan guarantee to power generation company Cogentrix that gives the final go-ahead for what will soon become the world’s largest concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) facility.
The 30 MW project is under construction near Alamosa, Colorado, where the high level of direct solar irradiation provides good conditions for CPV, which relies on clear blue skies to keep energy output close to its peak level.
Under the terms of the related power purchase agreement, the Public Service Company of Colorado will buy the power generated by the site for 20 years after it becomes operational.
Amonix, which has a large CPV module manufacturing facility in Nevada, is the key systems supplier to the project, under which more than 80% of components are expected to be sourced from within the US.

The concentrated photovoltaic market is stirring. A few weeks ago, we brought news of the largest CPV project in the U.S. Developments from SolFocus, Soitec, Solar Junction, and Amonix continue to make the news.
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu just made the $90.6 million loan guarantee to Cogentrix official this morning for the construction of the Alamosa Solar Generating Project, a 30-megawatt high concentration solar photovoltaic (HCPV) project in south-central Colorado. That 30 megawatts would hold the title as the largest CPV project in the world when it is completed at its target of mid-2012.
Cogentrix, a subsidiary of The Goldman Sachs Group, estimates that the project will create about 100 construction jobs and 10 operations jobs. The project will source over 80 percent of its components from the U.S. Most of Cogentrix' previous projects have been for fossil fuel plants.
Cogentrix plans to use the mammoth concentrating panels from CPV veteran Amonix, the Kleiner Perkins- and Westly Group-backed solar hardware supplier. Ben Kortlang, the KPCB partner on the Amonix board of directors, spent eight years at Goldman Sachs prior to his Kleiner Perkins role and investment in Amonix.

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu says that the Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized a $90.6m loan guarantee to Cogentrix of Alamosa LLC. Announced as an offer of a conditional commitment in May, the loan guarantee will support the Alamosa Solar Generating Project, a 30MW high-concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) power generation facility in south-central Colorado near the city of Alamosa.
The project represents one of the first utility-scale HCPV energy generation facilities in the USA and, when completed, the largest of its kind in the world, it is reckoned. Founded in 1983, power generation project developer Cogentrix Energy LLC of Charlotte, NC (a subsidiary of The Goldman Sachs Group Inc) estimates that the project will support up to 100 construction jobs.
“On Thursday, President Obama spoke about the need to continue creating the jobs of the future,” says Secretary Chu. “That’s exactly what today’s investment does – putting Americans to work right away and helping position us to win the global race for the clean energy industries of tomorrow,” he adds.
The proposed facility will use HCPV systems designed and made by Amonix Inc of Seal Beach, CA, USA consisting of concentrating optics and multi-junction solar cell panels controlled by a dual-axis tracking system that rotates and tilts the cells throughout the day so the surface of the solar panel maintains an optimal angle with respect to the sun. Cogentrix estimates that the multi-junction solar cells are nearly 40% efficient (about double that of more traditional PV panels), making CPV technology advantageous in areas with high amounts of direct sunlight, such as Alamosa County.
