The Orange County-Los Angeles area had 89,592 jobs directly related to the clean economy last year, up from 62,807 in 2003 and the second-highest in the country after Greater New York City-Northern New Jersey, according to a study released today by The Brookings Institution.

Waste management and treatment accounted for the most new jobs — 5,951 — while green building materials was the largest segment in the fastest-growing group, adding 3,924 positions.

Amonix Inc. in Seal Beach, which makes concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) commercial solar power systems, and Anaheim’s Fisker Automotive, maker of a new plug-in hybrid electric car, were cited in the report as among the local up-and-coming companies in the green economy.
